the worms has separation anxiety

our doggie emilio (also lovingly referred to as ewormio, worms, and the worms due to a bout with worms when we first got him) has been a part of our family since december 2nd. we adopted him from the austin humane society and he's the most loving and smart dog ever. we thought we hit the jackpot when we got him home and he was already house trained and well-behaved.

BUT.

it turns out he's crazy.

over the past few weeks, he's been working himself into a state of panic whenever nick and i leave the apartment. i think he thinks we're abandoning him! and now he's escalated his anxiety to pooping all over himself and our apartment when we leave. it's so sad that we will now have to crate him when we leave but we just can't deal with scraping poop off every imaginable surface when we get home.

we've tried all sorts of tips from the interwebs (practice leaving but come right back, exercise him to death, ignore him, give him treats, etc.) but nothing seems to be working. i think our next step might be meds.

anyone go through separation anxiety with their dog before?
